Roland XP-50 Patch List

Brief history – when I was around 16 I saved up my paperboy money and bought a slightly used Yamaha DX-7 for $1,000. Most of my synth time had been spent on the school’s Roland Juno, which our band teacher was very gracious in letting me take home for the weekend, and I still have some cassette tapes of me just noodling around on it. I still miss the sound of that keyboard. But my Casio wasn’t cutting it, and everybody said the DX-7 was the professional keyboard, so I bought it as I was part of a band and I was the keyboard player. And I got the books to make your own patches (“600 voices for the DX-7” kept me quite busy). And the memory cards. And I just never liked the sound. I can hear it all over the songs we did in my high school band, and I just wish I had a fatter synth instead. Something like a Juno.

In 2019 I got it in my head that I should just buy an older keyboard that might scratch that itch. At this point the only keys I had was my wife’s Roland electric piano, otherwise I was using whatever was available at the rehearsal space (consumer keyboards have come a LONG way in quality, and I could do everything I needed to do in a classic rock band with just some piano and organ patches). So I started looking on facebook and craigslist, and roland’s caught my eye, as did kurzweil, old korg’s. All the old stuff that I wish I had taken the financial chance on back then, I was willing to take a very small financial now (<$500). I really really wanted a Kurzweil but the seller was a ghost, and I ended up scoring a XP-50, including a road case. The transaction happened in a parking lot, so no road test was done but the seller assured me it worked, and my research on him showed that he had been in a wedding band for many years so it wasn’t a con. He threw a Oxygen8 mini keyboard as well for me to seal the deal.

I knew I was getting an old, well-used keyboard. There was a key that had broken, but had been glued back together. There was duct tape covering up the mono-output on the back. But it powered on and seemed to work. Unfortunately the sound quality, from all the outputs (phone, left, right) had noise. And my first night playing it, I broke another key. So now it was a project keyboard.

I bought a couple of replacement keys and fixed that part which was nice. And I did some research about the noise, and it looks like I’ll have to replace about 25 circuits inside (thanks to this fantastic video and subsequent comments). And to be honest I didn’t really like the feel of the keys anyway; i’ve gotten pretty used to something a little more solid. But I was able to start dabbling with Garageband and VST’s, and in particular the oxygen ended up being a ton of fun to play with, especially on various rock-organs as the mod wheel works pretty consistently and gives me some nice texture to play with.

UPDATE 9/10/20: Making note to myself of the actual capacitors that I should be getting for this project. The video recommends using Panasonic caps and a commenter made this list. I. used digikey.com for pricing. Shipping added $5 USPS 3days, $8 fedex/ups and no faster.

About a year after the purchase, I’ve rearranged the music room a bit, and picked up a MIDI interface to go with my new macbook, and wanted to get some more use out of the XP-50. I’ve never soldered before so I’ve been hesitant to jump into the repair, but today for kicks I put headphones in the jack and the sound seems quite clean. Perhaps a little low, so there could still be a problem, but I might be able to check out what patches it has on-board instead of my hunting around for VST’s to plug into garageband or subsequent software. As of this writing, I do need to go hunting around to learn how to access the specific banks listed below, but it is something I look forward to. And someday I may look like an 80’s rock star with my ancient synth and mini-synth kicking out some great cheesy pop.
